We have some amazing co-curricular activities planned for the upcoming 2017 Fall semester! Take a look below to see just what is on offer in Far North Queensland this Fall.
Hire a bike and spend an afternoon getting to know your local area - the Ross River - by pedal power. A favourite area of the locals at sunset and the best way to work off that Tim Tam addiction! Gizmo will show you the best spots to hang out, feed turtles, play volleyball or chill by the pool. Not to be missed! This event is free if you have your own bike (I would recommend getting one for your semester in Townsville).
FREE Welcome Breakfast at Odyssey – easily the best place to get breakie anywhere in Townsville with omelettes as big as your head and fluffy delicious pancakes which melt in your mouth – did I mention the fresh fruit smoothies too? Walking tour of the Strand and the local art gallery afterwards with your local guide, Gizmo, followed by a wander through the local Cotters Markets to find unique tropical fruits, stuffed cane toads, and crocodile belts.
Free welcome dinner in Cairns city exploring the amazing esplanade and fantastic array of cultural foods to eat - we can even explore the night markets afterwards to see how many weird and wonderful things we can find.
Come and learn to sail with a local crew and get to know some Cairns Aussies – this is run by Cairns Yacht club. We can’t 100% guarantee you’ll get on a boat but usually there is plenty of space. It’s truly a magical afternoon watching the amazing yachts sailing around the bay and learning how to navigate the waters of Cairns.
If you've always wanted to see the incredible Northern New South Wales coast and the Easternmost Point of Australia then a quick flight up to the Gold Coast is for you!
Please note: you will need to purchase your own flight to the Gold Coast Airport at your own expense.
Road trip to explore the northern beaches and learn about the native trees and plants used by the aboriginal people through the Wulgurukaba plant trail. Then we’ll head off to picnic at a crystal clear river with a beautiful waterfall and play on the rock slides.
Road trip to explore the area west of Cairns - there's massive termite mounds, Emerald Creek Ice Creamery and also a visit to Granite Gorge Nature park where we hand feed wallabies, look for turtles and experience the gorge walk just before sunset!
Road trip to explore the area west South West Cairns - there's impressive waterfalls, wide open spaces, huge volcanic lava tubes and heaps of Australian wildlife to meet. We stay overnight, glamping it up and enjoying smores by the campfire while listening to local guides tell us stories of the area. This excursion is open to Townsville students but they will need to make their own way to Cairns.
Stunningly beautiful Ross River Kayak tour at sunset with a local guide with plenty of knowledge of the local flora and fauna. This one was a real highlight last semester and we floated happily among giant lotus fields which looked like a scene from Alice in Wonderland!
If you haven’t yet heard about it – every local in Townsville’s done the goat track or the Cudtheringa track up Castle Hill – it’s one not to be missed! It even got 3 Puff’s out of 5 on the puffometer (this is a real term according to “thegoTownsville”. Join Gizmo on an afternoon hike on one or two of the 15 different tracks up this iconic rock and visit the local watering hole afterwards for the best gelato in Townsville – Juliettes: it’s practically an institution!
Come and learn to sail with a local crew and get to know some Townsville Aussies – this is run by Townsville Yacht club. Arcadia can’t guarantee you’ll get on a boat but usually there is plenty of space. It’s truly a magical evening watching the sunset from the boat and learning how to navigate the waters of Magnetic Island Bay. Bucket list TICK!
Road trip up to Mission Beach where the tropical rainforest meets the reef for a weekend of good food, great company, kayaking and picnics with billy tea and damper. We will be hiking in cassowary country, creating our own adventures and engaging in aboriginal cultural activities. There will be crystal clear waterholes to explore, spectacular lookouts and beach time to chill and we also visit Dunk Island. Did I mention it’s FREE?!
Celebrate with a FREE group dinner on Townsville’s “eat” street – Palmer’s Street. We’ll share stories from the semester, decide who ate the most Tim Tams and who spent the most time getting Juliettes and eating it in the group study rooms of the library.
Celebrate with a FREE group dinner at Trinity Beach where we can sample amazing Italian cuisine by the seaside and share adventures and stories from your semester abroad.
